Marrying between Veluwezoom, castle and river country

Gelderland offers full wedding days at one address: a castle hotel, estate or historic city hotel. Distances within the province are larger than in Groningen; plan travel time between the Veluwe, Arnhem/Nijmegen and Maas & Waal deliberately.

Estates usually offer an indoor alternative; outdoor ceremonies in a park or orchard need a concrete plan B. That is basic planning, not a detail.

On estates, filtered light under trees works better than harsh midday sun on open lawns. I often plan portraits shortly after the ceremony or before dinner, when the light softens.

On the Veluwezoom, forest shade matters: shorter sessions in the lanes avoid hard contrast. In Maas & Waal, watch wind by the moat and orchard.

A solid rain plan matters photographically as much as a strong outdoor spot: indoor rooms with windows or a covered transition keep the reportage fluid.

Getting married in Gelderland

A legal Dutch marriage requires a civil ceremony at a municipality-approved location. Gelderland municipalities include Putten, Arnhem, Barneveld, Rheden, Beuningen, Nijmegen, Wageningen and others; your venue or gemeente guides the paperwork. Non-Dutch nationals need valid passports and may need documents from home; allow three to six months.

Gelderland sits centrally in the Netherlands. Schiphol connects by train via Utrecht/Arnhem or Nijmegen depending on your venue; I travel from Groningen and discuss travel time in the consult.

Travel & stay

Reaching Gelderland

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) reaches Arnhem by train in roughly one to one and a half hours depending on the connection; Nijmegen and Putten need more time. Share clear directions with guests travelling from the west.

From Groningen, Putten and Barneveld are about 1.5–2 hours by car; Arnhem, De Steeg, Nijmegen and Ewijk need more time. Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ) can shorten the northern leg for some guests.
