Overijssel offers full wedding days at one address: a historic manor, estate hotel or boutique hotel by the water. Distances between Twente, Salland and Deventer are manageable, but each region has its own character. From heath on the Salland Ridge to river light in Deventer.

Estates usually offer an indoor alternative; outdoor ceremonies by heath or water need a concrete plan B. That is not a detail, but basic planning for a northern wedding day.

Light and space in Overijssel

On estates, filtered light under trees works better than harsh midday sun on open lawns. I often plan portraits shortly after the ceremony or before dinner, when the light softens.

On the IJssel and in the Reestdal, wind matters: choose a sheltered bank or façade as backdrop. On the Salland Ridge, heath is photographically usable in late summer, but open heath asks for shorter sessions and respect for nature.

A solid rain plan matters photographically as much as a strong outdoor spot: indoor rooms with windows or a covered transition keep the reportage fluid.

Getting married in Overijssel

A legal Dutch marriage requires a civil ceremony at a municipality-approved location. Overijssel municipalities include Zwolle, Deventer, Enschede, Hardenberg, Rijssen-Holten and others; your venue or gemeente guides the paperwork. Non-Dutch nationals need valid passports and may need documents from home; allow three to six months.

I photograph in English and am used to international guests. We align timelines in a planning call.

Overijssel sits between the Randstad and the northern provinces. Schiphol connects by train via Zwolle or Deventer depending on your venue; I travel from Groningen and discuss travel time in the consult.

Travel & stay

Reaching Overijssel

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) reaches Zwolle by train in roughly one to one and a half hours depending on the connection; Deventer and Holten take longer; Enschede further still. Share clear directions with guests travelling from the west.

From Groningen, Zwolle is about 1–1.25 hours by car or train; Deventer, Holten and Enschede need more time. Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ) can shorten the northern leg for some guests.

Guest accommodation: Den Alerdinck (up to 24 people after the wedding per official site), Carelshaven, De Uitkijk, OldRuitenborgh, Pillows and De Broeierd offer rooms or suites (confirm current numbers).
