Guide

Best wedding venues in Groningen

A photographer’s shortlist for couples who want character, light and a calm pace.

Groningen

Why the north works — from a photographer's calendar

I photograph weddings from Martinikerk to Fraeylemaborg in one day more often than people expect — the province is compact. That matters when you plan ceremony light at 14:00 and golden hour on the Paterswoldsemeer at 20:00.

Northern light is clear and often sideways — good for portraits if you account for wind. Estates with deep gardens (Fraeylemaborg, Lemferdinge) filter it; open water (De Paalkoepel, De Buitensociëteit) holds golden hour longer.

This guide is written from my work as a photographer, not as a booking platform. Capacities are indicative; always confirm with the venue. For how I photograph weddings here, see wedding photography in Groningen.

Photography

What makes a venue photograph well?

I do not choose venues for Pinterest — I choose them for how a real Saturday flows. Where is the sun at 3 p.m.? Where do guests naturally gather? Where do we go if it rains?

Northern light is bright and directional — beautiful for portraits if we time it. Estates give shade; open water gives long evenings but wind. Cloud cover is often kinder than harsh midday sun.

Venues that hold ceremony, drinks and dinner on one site make transitions smoother — and that shows in the pictures.

Portrait stops I use between ceremony and party — not licensed venues, but part of real wedding days in the province.

Province

Portrait spots beyond the venue

  • Reitdiep valley

Dikes, water and quiet villages between city and countryside.

FotografieI use this corridor when the ceremony is in the city and the party is at Fraeylemaborg or in Oldambt — Garnwerd quay is twenty minutes from Slochteren.

  • Garnwerd

A Reitdiep village on the quay.

FotografieTen-minute stop after a city ceremony when couples want one northern village image without a full province session.

  • Appingedam

Hanging kitchens and medieval lanes — twenty minutes from the city.

FotografieDamsterdiep kitchens in the evening — filtered light in the narrow streets even on grey days.

  • Haren

Village lanes and the Paterswoldsemeer edge — minutes from De Paalkoepel.

FotografieQuiet portraits between De Paalkoepel ceremonies and Paterswoldsemeer golden hour.

  • Oldambt windmills

Flat farmland and classic mills east of the city.

FotografieGolden hour stop on the drive to or from Boerderij Hermans Dijkstra — wide sky, few people.

For international couples

Getting married in the Netherlands

A legal Dutch marriage requires a civil ceremony conducted by a registrar at a municipality-approved location. Many couples marry at the venue; others marry at the city hall and celebrate at an estate. Non-Dutch nationals need valid passports and, depending on nationality, documents from your home country — the municipality (gemeente) Groningen or your venue’s municipality guides this process. Start paperwork early; three to six months is common.

I photograph in English (and Ukrainian) and am used to guests flying in from several countries. Timelines, toasts and family dynamics vary — we align on key moments in a planning call rather than assuming a Dutch schedule.

If you are studying or working in Groningen, a local wedding can be simpler than a destination wedding abroad: guests reach you by train from Schiphol in under three hours, and you keep one legal system.

Travel & stay

Reaching Groningen

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the main international airport — direct trains to Groningen take about 2 hours 10 minutes. Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ) has limited European flights and is 20 minutes from the city by car.

The city centre is compact and walkable; estates and lakes are 15–40 minutes by car. For countryside venues, arrange shuttles or share clear taxi numbers — late-night transport is sparse.

Guest accommodation: Hotel Prinsenhof and De Paalkoepel area (Haren) for city and lake; estates often have partner hotels listed. Book early for summer weekends — university city demand is real.
