How Friesland weddings differ from Groningen

I photograph Friesland several times a year from Groningen, usually Sneekermeer, Oranjewoud or the south-west lakes. The drive from Groningen to Sneek is under an hour; guests often arrive by boat or train to Leeuwarden.

Water is not backdrop here, it shapes the day. Boat arrivals at De Pollepleats, terrace ceremonies at Beachclub Sneek, woodland at Tjaarda: I plan portraits around wind and when guests are still outside before dinner.

Official lakeside venue in Westhem: indoor or outdoor ceremony, celebration and overnight stays. Many couples arrive by boat, I photograph that approach from the shore without blocking the crew.

Why it photographs wellWater, meadows and movement, boat arrival is a reportage moment I brief with the skipper beforehand. Golden hour on the shore works for portraits after guests go inside.

Photography

Photographing on Frisian water

Water gives reflection and horizon, but also wind. I often plan portraits just before dinner, when light is low and guests are still outside. In strong wind we use a façade or reed edge for shelter.

Boats and arrivals are reportage moments: I stay out of the crew's way and capture the feeling, not only the picture. That needs alignment with the venue beforehand.

Winter parties at Beachclub Sneek and similar venues work well indoors: floor-to-ceiling windows on the Sneekermeer, warm light inside while it is cold on the terrace.

For international couples

Getting married in Friesland

A legal Dutch marriage requires a civil ceremony conducted by a registrar at a municipality-approved location. Friesland municipalities include Leeuwarden, Súdwest-Fryslân (Sneek, Bolsward), Heerenveen and others, your venue or gemeente guides the paperwork. Start three to six months ahead if you are non-Dutch.

I photograph in English (and Ukrainian) and am used to guests flying in from several countries. We align on key moments in a planning call rather than assuming a Dutch schedule.

Friesland is reachable from Amsterdam Schiphol by train to Leeuwarden in about two hours, simpler than a wedding abroad for couples already in the Netherlands.

Travel & stay

Reaching Friesland

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Leeuwarden by direct train takes about 2 hours. Sneek and Heerenveen are on regional lines; Harlingen and Makkum need a car from Leeuwarden (30–45 minutes).

Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ) is 45–60 minutes from Leeuwarden by car, limited European flights.

Guest accommodation: Lauswolt and Tjaarda have rooms; Pollepleats and De Morra offer on-site or nearby stays. Book summer weekends early, sailing events fill the lakes.
