How Drenthe weddings run in practice

Drenthe couples often book a garden or orchard ceremony at a farm or estate, De Loeghoeve, Havixhorst, Wildryck. I photograph there regularly; the day moves slower than a city wedding, with portrait blocks in the park or on nearby heath before dinner.

Heath and forest need a rain plan we agree in advance, not on the day. If it showers, we move to a garden wall or tree cover rather than cancelling portraits.

Photographing heath and woodland

Heath and forest give colour and texture that reads instantly as Drenthe. I plan short portrait blocks in the last light on heath, not twenty minutes of walking, but five minutes truly together.

Wind on open heath can be uncomfortable for guests in formal wear. We keep group photos brief and move intimate portraits to tree cover or a garden wall.

Estates with gardens give even light on cloudy days, often kinder than harsh midday sun on open fields.

For international couples

Getting married in Drenthe

A legal Dutch marriage requires a civil ceremony at a municipality-approved location. Drenthe municipalities include Assen, Meppel, Coevorden, Emmen and others, your venue or gemeente guides paperwork. Non-Dutch nationals need valid passports and may need documents from home; allow three to six months.

I photograph in English and am used to international guests. We align timelines in a planning call.

Drenthe is reachable from Schiphol to Assen by train in about 2 hours 15 minutes, often via Zwolle or Amersfoort depending on the connection.

Travel & stay

Reaching Drenthe

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Assen by train takes about 2 hours 15 minutes. Meppel and Beilen are central for De Havixhorst; Diever and Exloo need a car from Assen (30–50 minutes).

Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ) is 30–45 minutes from Assen by car.

Guest accommodation: Havixhorst, Overcinge, Wildryck, Landhotel Diever, Hunzebergen, De Bonte Wever and Onder De Linden have rooms or lodging; farms such as De Loeghoeve too. Confirm current capacity. Book heath-season weekends early.
