How I choose a couples location

Most of my Groningen couples sessions are 60–90 minutes on foot. I pick the spot for where the light falls at your time of day — not because it ranks on Pinterest. Noorderplantsoen at 09:00 is a different shoot than the canals at 19:00 in June.

The province is closer than it looks: Garnwerd, Appingedam and Blauwestad are within forty minutes of the centre. If you are new here — RUG student, expat partner, visiting family — this is written in plain English, without Dutch venue jargon.

Everything below is public access. We skip market mornings at the Grote Markt and busy Paterswoldsemeer beach strips. Use the chooser if you are torn between city and water.

City & park

City & parkGroningen · city

Noorderplantsoen

The north-side park I use most for city sessions: tree tunnels along the main path, quieter on weekday mornings than Stadspark.

Why it photographs wellFiltered light through the elms; spring and late summer are richest. I walk couples through the tree tunnel rather than posing on the open lawn.

Practical notesParking nearby; avoid sunny July midday (hard light, busier).

Best season
April–October; autumn leaf colour.
Best time
Morning (08:00–10:00) or late afternoon.
Photography style
Natural, walking, light guidance.
Privacy

City & parkGroningen · city centre

Canals & A-kade

Bridges, brick and water in the heart of the city — A-kade, Diepenring, Herebrug.

Why it photographs wellWest-facing façades catch evening light in summer; that is when I schedule canal shoots. Reflections on still water after 18:00.

Practical notes30–45 minute walking route; start at A-kade or Herebrug.

Best season
Year-round; misty winter can be atmospheric.
Best time
Golden hour or overcast afternoon.
Photography style

Couples photography near historic architecture in Groningen

Couples photography · Groningen city

City & parkGroningen · Grote Markt

Martinikerkhof

The square around the Martinikerk: history, stone and the tower as a silhouette. Strong backdrop without standing inside the church.

Why it photographs wellSymmetry and height; evening light on façades works well. Short stops — not a long session in one place.

Practical notesAvoid Tuesday and Saturday market days; check Grote Markt events calendar.

Best season
Spring–autumn; Christmas lights in December.
Best time
Early morning or after 17:00 in summer.
Photography style
Classic, architecture, warm but stately.
Privacy
Low at peak hours — early or late is better.

Water & dykes

Couples photography by water in Groningen

Couples photography · Groningen

Water & dykesGroningen city / Reitdiep valley

Reitdiep & Reitdiepkade

The water that connects the city to the landscape: modern quays in town, dykes and quiet stretches towards Garnwerd.

Why it photographs wellI have shot both the city quay and the dike towards Garnwerd on the same evening — long lines and reflections. Wind moves hair and coats; I use it rather than fighting it.

Practical notesChoose a start point: city quay or village stretch; 15–25 minutes between both by car.

Best season
March–October; winter can be minimal and still.
Best time
Golden hour; avoid harsh midday sun on open dykes.
Photography style
Cinematic, spacious, reportage.
Privacy
High outside the city; medium on the quay.

Ideal forCouples who want water and horizon without leaving the region.

Couples photography at Blauwestad lakes

Couples photography · Blauwestad

Water & dykesOldambt · east Groningen

Blauwestad

Oldambt lakes east of the city — I photographed a wedding here; the shores are wide and often empty on weekday evenings.

Why it photographs wellOpen sky and long shadows; the evening light over Blauwestad water is why I suggest it for couples who want horizon without driving to Friesland.

Practical notes30–40 minutes from the city by car; pick one shore point.

Best season
Spring–autumn; winter can be stark but minimal.
Best time
Late afternoon.
Photography style
Cinematic, calm pace.
Privacy
High — little foot traffic outside peak season.

Ideal forCouples who want something different from canals — still reachable from Groningen.

Couples photography at a quiet lake

Mood image · Groningen lake

Water & dykesMid-Groningen

Schildmeer

A Groningen lake between villages — quieter than Paterswoldsemeer on summer Saturdays.

Why it photographs wellReflection and reeds at the shore; soft light on cloudy days.

Practical notesCheck wind on open water; backup: nearby tree-lined dyke.

Best season
May–October.
Best time
Morning mist or golden hour.
Photography style
Natural, understated.
Privacy
High.

Ideal forCouples who value privacy and calm over recognisability.

Historic & village

Couples photography in a historic village by the water

Mood image · Reitdiep village

Historic & villageWinsum · Reitdiep

Garnwerd

A village on the Reitdiep where time feels slower — quays, boats and narrow lanes.

Why it photographs wellI shoot on the quay and along the dike towards Winsum — northern character without tourist buses. Water and façades in one walk.

Practical notesPark at the quay; stay on public paths and be respectful in a small village.

Best season
April–October.
Best time
Morning or afternoon.
Photography style
Documentary, calm walking.
Privacy
High — work respectfully in a small community.

Ideal forCouples who want village and water far from the centre.

Couples photography in historic streets

Mood image · historic Groningen

Historic & villageAppingedam · 15 min from Groningen

Appingedam

Hanging kitchens on Damsterdiep, bridges and medieval lanes — fifteen minutes from Groningen city.

Why it photographs wellThe overhanging kitchens are why couples ask for Appingedam; narrow streets filter light even on overcast days.

Practical notesCombine with coffee in the centre; park near Vismarkt.

Best season
Year-round.
Best time
Afternoon or overcast day.
Photography style
Editorial, architecture, intimate.
Privacy
Medium in the centre — short stops.

Ideal forCouples who want unique backdrops without a long trip.

Nature & open air

Couples photography in a garden setting near Haren

Couples photography · Haren

Nature & open airHaren · south of Groningen

Haren & Hortus Haren

Haren offers tree-lined lanes; the Hortus adds tropical glasshouses and formal gardens — two worlds minutes apart.

Why it photographs wellGlasshouses: diffused light year-round. Outdoor gardens strongest in spring and summer.

Practical notesHortus: check tickets and photography rules before we book — commercial shoots sometimes need written permission.

Best season
Year-round in glasshouses; gardens spring–summer.
Best time
Morning in the Hortus (fewer visitors).
Photography style
Green, soft, sometimes botanical.
Privacy
Hortus: entry rules; outside Haren is quieter.

Ideal forCouples who want gardens and a premium green setting.

Couples photography in open countryside

Mood image · Westerwolde

Nature & open airSouth-east Groningen

Westerwolde

Tree-lined lanes near Bellingwolde and Vriescheloo — wide sky, few people, almost Drenthe in feel.

How I work on location

For a couples session I care about three things: direction of light, background noise, and whether we can walk without stopping every two minutes for passers-by.

Northern light is bright — best in the morning or the last hour before sunset. Midday sun on open water or white brick can be harsh; cloud cover is often kinder. Parks and woodland filter light softer.

Privacy shapes how relaxed you feel. On busy squares I choose early hours; in the province we have room to talk. That shows in the images — intimacy comes from space, not the fame of the place.

In the city I keep couples moving along the canals — we do not stand in one spot for twenty minutes. In the province I build in a short drive and one walk; wind on open dykes is real, and I factor that into where we park.

Smaller stops I use in real sessions — not always a full hour, but worth knowing if your first choice is busy.

Beyond the list

Smaller spots worth knowing

  • Usquert

Tiny Reitdiep village with church and water.

FotografieI often add ten minutes here after Garnwerd — the quay still catches afternoon light.

  • Onnen

Village lanes south of Haren, near woodland.

FotografieUseful when Hortus is fully booked or you want forest edges without a ticket.

  • Stadspark

Larger than Noorderplantsoen — bridges and water features.

FotografieSaturday runners along the main path; weekday mornings are calmer.

  • Helpman

City neighbourhood with unexpected green pockets.

FotografieSouth-city couples who cycle here skip the province drive entirely.

FAQ

Common questions about couples shoots in Groningen

Packages are on the prices page. Travel within Groningen city is included; locations further out are quoted transparently.

Usually 60–90 minutes — enough for one location with calm, or two close spots. Longer is possible but shorter often keeps you fresh and the images spontaneous.

On public land usually yes, respectfully. Hortus Haren and some sites need tickets or permission — I check in advance.

Every season works. Spring and summer for green; autumn for colour; winter for mist and quiet city streets.

City for canals and architecture; province for space and silence. One setting per session usually feels better than rushing between two worlds.

Same approach. Engagements can be slightly dressier; a love shoot can be more casual. The pace stays natural.

Noorderplantsoen or the canals for recognisable Groningen in under 90 minutes.

Umbrellas, glasshouses at Hortus Haren, or covered alleys in Appingedam or the city. We always have a plan B.

Within three weeks via an online gallery. If busy, I communicate that upfront.
